How to use this freezer inventory printable

A freezer inventory works best when it is simple enough that you will actually update it. Keep the finished sheet on the freezer door, inside a nearby cabinet, or in a home-management binder.

  1. Choose a freezer type. Select a refrigerator freezer, chest/deep freezer, or upright freezer.
  2. Pick only the columns you need. A simple list may use Item, Quantity, and Location. A detailed list can also include dates and notes.
  3. Add items now or print it blank. Type a few foods before printing, or clear the examples and fill the sheet by hand.
  4. Print or save as PDF. Use your browser’s print window to print the sheet or save a PDF copy.

What should you track in a freezer inventory?

You do not need to track everything. Start with the details that help you answer three questions: What do I have? How much is left? Where is it?

Item

The food or meal name. Keep names short enough to scan quickly.

Quantity

Use whatever is easiest: “2 bags,” “4 portions,” “1 container,” or a simple number.

Location

Especially useful for chest freezers: Basket A, Basket B, top shelf, bottom right, and so on.

Date frozen

Helpful when you rotate food and want older items used first.

Use by

Use this as your own planning reminder. Follow appropriate food-safety guidance rather than this sheet alone.

Category

Examples include meals, seafood, meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, and desserts.

Freezer inventory ideas by freezer type

Chest or deep freezer

For a chest freezer, the Location column is especially useful. Give baskets and zones simple names such as Basket A, Basket B, Bottom Left, and Bottom Right.

Upright freezer

Shelf names such as Top Shelf, Middle Shelf, Drawer 1, and Door can make an upright freezer inventory faster to maintain.

Refrigerator freezer

For a smaller refrigerator freezer, a basic inventory with Item and Quantity may be enough. Try the Large Print preset for a quick list that is easy to update by hand.
